Putin and his old Stasi friend Warnig happy together
Russia´s ruler Vladimir Putin can - and should - be blamed for much. But there is one thing you can not blame him for: Putin never forgets to reward his old friends from the KGB - including colleagues from its DDR sister organisation, the Stasi. Russia´s Kommersant newspaper provides new proof for this:
Matthias Warnig now heads the Nord Stream pipeline construction project and knew Putin from the prime minister's days as a Soviet-era intelligence worker, the Kommersant business daily reported.
Putin urged the Russian energy ministry to propose Warnig's candidacy to the Rosneft board in a letter signed April 14, Kommersant cited government and ministry sources as saying.

Here is a short presentation of Putin´s German friend:
Matthias Warnig (born 26 July 1955) is a former member of the Stasi and currently the Managing Director (CEO) of the Nord Stream AG, a company for construction and operation of the Nord Stream submarine gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.
In 1971 Warnig started his career at the Stasi, the secret police of communist East Germany.
Warnig allegedly worked with KGB agent Vladimir Putin. The two men collaborated on recruiting West German citizens for the KGB. These allusions were denied by Matthias Warnig saying that he met Vladimir Putin for the first time in his life in 1991, when Putin was the head of the Committee for External Relations of the Saint Petersburg Mayor's Office. (Of course Warnig is lying, NNoN)
Warnig had apparently spied on Dresdner Bank AG in West Germany before he began to work in the bank.
Dresdner Bank attempted to get a banking operating license in Saint Petersburg, where Vladimir Putin was now in charge of foreign economic relations. Warnig took part in negotiations. The office was opened in 1991. Warnig became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dresdner Bank ZAO, Dresdner Bank Russian subsidiary. In 2004-05, the bank advised on the controversial forced sale of Yukos assets.
Schröder and former Stasi agent Warnig happy together
Stasi ex agent Warnig is also a close colleague of former German social democrat chancellor Gerhard Schröder (also recruited by Putin). On the Nord Stream´s webpage the following caption is attached to this photo of the two friends:
Gerhard Schröder, Chairman of the Shareholders' Committee and former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Matthias Warnig, Managing Director Nord Stream at Nord Stream's start of construction event in Portvaya Bay, Russia, April 10, 2010
As we can see, no problems at all for Herr Schröder to smile together with a former Stasi spy.
