President Barack Obama traveled to California on Friday to highlight the state’s drought emergency at two events near Fresno, calling for shared sacrifice to help manage the state’s worst water shortage in decades. He then spent the rest of the weekend enjoying the hospitality of some of the state’s top water hogs: desert golf courses.
Vacationing with DVDs of his favorite television shows and multiple golf outings with his buddies, the duffer in chief played at two of the most exclusive courses in the Palm Springs area. On Saturday, Obama played at the Sunnylands estate, built by the late billionaire Walter Annenberg, which features a nine-hole course that is played like 18 holes. The following day he golfed at billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison’s 19-hole Porcupine Creek. On Presidents’ Day, Obama hit the links at Sunnylands once again.
The 124 golf courses in the Coachella Valley consume roughly 17% of all water there, and one-quarter of the water pumped out of the region’s at-risk groundwater aquifer, according to the Coachella Valley Water District.

John Kerry: "Climate change can now be considered the world's largest weapon of mass destruction"

US Secretary of State John Kerry has given a speech at a shopping mall in Jakarta:

"We should not allow a tiny minority of shoddy scientists and science and extreme ideologues to compete with scientific facts," Kerry told the audience at a US Embassy-run American Center in a shopping mall.
"Nor should we allow any room for those who think that the costs associated with doing the right thing outweigh the benefits."
"The science is unequivocal, and those who refuse to believe it are simply burying their heads in the sand," Kerry said. "We don't have time for a meeting anywhere of the Flat Earth Society,"
Kerry said the cost of inaction will far outweigh the significant expense of reducing greenhouse gas emissions that trap solar heat in the atmosphere and contribute to the Earth's rising temperatures.
He outlined a litany of recent weather disasters, particularly flooding and typhoons in Asia, and their impact on commerce, agriculture, fishing and daily living conditions for billions of people.
"This city, this country, this region, is really on the front lines of climate change," Kerry said. "It's not an exaggeration to say that your entire way of life here is at risk."
He added: "In a sense, climate change can now be considered the world's largest weapon of mass destruction, perhaps even, the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction."

It is very sad that the US has a secretary of state, who considers non-existent human caused climate change as "the world's largest weapon of mass destruction". If somebody is a member of the Flat Earth Society, it is John Kerry.

Earth Hour and Spider-Man Andrew Garfield join forces in order to save the planet

Today it was announced that  Earth Hour and Spider-Man join forces  in order  to "save the planet":

In a first of its kind partnership, Spider-Man will be the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour, the global movement organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), with a message to inspire individuals to use their power to become Super Heroes for the planet.

The  Super Hero ambassador himself has made the following statement:

“I’m proud Spider-Man is the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour because he shows we can all be Super Heroes when we realize the power we all have,” says Andrew Garfield, who plays Spider-Man in the upcoming film. 

WWF/ Earth Hour could not have chosen better. The WWF has not yet announced the Ambassador's work schedule, but probably His Excellency is due to visit Madagascar, the Philippines and other Earth Hour project countries in  order to tell the natives that  they "can all be Super Heroes", when they "realize the power" they all have,  just like he has done:

Andrew’s impressive bank balance has ensured that today the actor can easily fulfill his childhood fantasy of leading a high profile lifestyle. The Spiderman star purchased a 3900 square feet home in the celebrity frequented Beverly Hills neighborhood in Los Angeles valued at $2.5 million in November 2012. Garfield has a marked fascination for sports cars and his garage boasts of high end vehicles of the class of Porsche Panamera and Audi A7.

Danish owner of "the first carbon-neutral hotel group in the world" on a mission to save the world from catastrophic global warming

When it comes to self-promotion, the Danes are second to none. The Forbes interview with Kirsten Brøchner, the owner of "the first carbon-neutral hotel group in the world" (consisting of two small family run hotels) is a case in point.

Ms. Brøchner is apparently on a  mission to revolutionize the entire international business community in order to save the world from catastrophic human caused global warming:  

For instance, I wanted to set up a climate school for companies with training courses for employees, teaching them how to choose the green option at work and at home. One example is when boiling water for tea—only boiling the water needed, so energy is not wasted on boiling extra.

Well, maybe it's not so surprising that even the "green" Danish government agencies have told Brøchner that her "climate school" is not their cup of tea:

Unfortunately, none of the many government agencies I asked for help were interested in supporting the idea.

Viviane Reding, deputy chief of the EU's executive, said Switzerland could not expect to keep the benefits of free trade without accepting freedom of movement.

"That is not possible. You take them all or you leave them all," Reding said.

Ross Clark, writing in the Express, gets it right:

It is one of the most cosmopolitan countries in the world and hosts the headquarters of the Red Cross as well as many other international organisations. But the people of Switzerland have come to realise that while migration can be enriching, uncontrolled migration – which came about as part of a deal with the EU in 2000 – has created problems.
Swiss workers have complained that foreign labour has pushed down wages and increased living costs. Sunday’s referendum did not call for gates to be erected at the border with signs saying “Swiss only. Others keep out”. Far from it. It simply called for controlled migration so that it can distinguish between those who are likely to benefit the economy and those who won’t.
To the leaders of the EU this is an anathema. They are pursuing an aggressive ideology of free movement of people within Europe without any regard to the consequences nor to the fact that what they are proposing is highly unpopular with a huge number of EU citizens.
The open borders policy has no democratic legitimacy. It has never been properly debated in member states. It has been introduced by stealth.

The euro and the EU are doomed

Political leaders and eurocrats have recently been celebrating the end of the euro crisis. They are of course lying. There is only a temporary lull before the next acute stage of the crisis sets in. If you do not believe me, read what the FT's columnist Gideon Rachman writes:
But there is also a different, darker interpretation that I find more convincing. This holds that the economic crisis has gravely damaged the euro. It has stripped the project of support and legitimacy and exposed the design flaws in the single currency. The biggest flaw remains the lack of a large central budget and a transfer union of the sort that makes other federal currencies, such as the dollar, work.
That weakness can only be remedied by the creation of something much closer to a European state. But the crisis has profoundly undermined the pro-European sentiment that would be necessary to build a United States of Europe. Even in Germany, which has historically supported the European ideal, the country’s most respected institutions are crying foul.
As a result, the euro is stuck with a floundering economy, inadequate institutions and weak support. That does not sound like a long-term recipe for success to me.

Westwood said that communicating the threat of climate change had become her priority and so she is keen to promote Greenpeace's work to protect the Arctic. "The status quo will kill us. People don't realise how quickly we are marching towards a possible mass extinction. Once the global temperature goes up beyond two degrees, you can't stop it. Current predictions are that we will see a rise of more like 4C or 6C, which would mean that everything below Paris would become uninhabitable."
