Canada´s PM Stephen Harper: There is no return for Putin´s Russia to G7

While Barack Obama has been strangely silent on this, Canada´s PM Stephen Harper hits the right note:

"I don't think Russia under Vladimir Putin belongs in the G7. Period," Harper told the Associated Press. "Canada would very, very strongly oppose Putin ever sitting around that table again. It would require consensus to bring Russia back and that consensus will just not happen."
The G7 suspended Russia from the grouping of leading industrialized nations following its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea last March, but has not ruled out a possible return under changed circumstances.
Harper, who is to visit Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk before heading to Bavaria for the G7 summit, said there was no room for conciliation with the Kremlin in light of the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and its alleged support of pro-Russia separatists fighting government troops in eastern Ukraine.
"This is a country that has shown a willingness to invade its neighbors, to actually seize territory that does not belong to it, and so I don't think we should take this escalation of a hostile military posture lightly. It needs to be treated seriously," said Harper, whose country is home to more than one million people of Ukrainian heritage.

Canadian forestry company shows how to deal with envirofundamentalist Greenpeace

Lies and intimidation have been the core of Greenpeace's campaigns against forest companies for years now. Most companies have chosen not to take a fight with the greenmailers fearing a no-win situation. Finally, one company, Canadian Resolute shows how to deal with the envirofundamentalist NGO:

In December, Greenpeace pulled the trigger, claiming it had proof from GPS-tagged video and pictures that one of the coalition industry members, Resolute Forest Products, was building logging roads in areas forbidden by the agreement. It released pictures it said were taken in August 2012 in Quebec’s Montagnes Blanches region, and it promptly resigned from the CBFA (Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement). --

Unlike Kimberly-Clark and Quebec-based hardware and lumber retailer Rona, which buckled under harsh criticism and paid greenmail, Resolute fought back, providing documentation that the allegations were untrue. It supplied “concrete milestones” that it had reached for caribou protection and the implementation of best practices.

When its prey did not drop, Greenpeace reloaded and fired again. Spokesperson Shane Moffat trumpeted “Greenpeace’s science-based advocacy for responsible forestry” as the group issued a report,Boreal Alarm that threatened to wreak havoc on Resolute’s brand if it didn’t junk its logging practices, already approved under the terms of the CBFA coalition, in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.

Greenpeace and its key allies were surprised at Resolute’s resoluteness. But the company believed it was standing on firm factual ground and refused to be bullied. Finally in a huge embarrassment, on March 19, the activist group admitted it had bungled its “investigation” and that the unimpeachable videos and photos were just plain wrong. Even as it crowed about its 40 years of commitment to “best available science and research,” Greenpeace admitted it relied on “inaccurate maps” before launching its highly public and damaging attacks.

The shale gas and oil revolution is paving the way for the great American railroad revival

The great steam engines will not return, but the American  railroad  revival is in full bloom.

The American shale gas and oil revolution is spreading its beneficial influence on a great number of industrial activities. The great American railroad revival is a case in point: 

According to data from Union Pacific (UP), the shale industry accounted for 133,000 extra UP carloads in 2012 – that’s an 84% increase from 2011. Indeed, even in the face of a coal shipment fallout, the rail industry is doing better than ever.

And the US Today reports that the railroad oil sector grew from 10,000 shipments a year to an estimated 200,000 a year in 2012.

The future for the once beleaguered U.S. and Canadian railroads is looking good:

Plus, another added benefit from America’s booming energy industry is that new manufacturing and chemical plants will also need to get their goods from landlocked states to the coast – I’m looking at you Ohio.

From a market standpoint all of the big names in rail are up double digits year over year. – Union Pacific (UNP) up 29%, Norfolk Southern (NSC) up 15% and CSX (CSX) up 10%. Each also pays near a 2% dividend.

Feeding off the same trends, the smaller U.S. rail players have done even better.

Kansas City Southern (KSU) is up 48% year over year. And one company that falls short of the top-5 by revenue, Genessee & Wyoming Inc (GWR), jumped 64% year over year.

Importantly for today’s discussion, the gains for these rail companies are just the beginning…

According to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Transportation, by 2040 demand for rail hauling is expected to increase 50% — to $27.5 billion. Indeed, rising demand for a low-cost industry like rail can lead to some solid long-term gains.

And the rail industry will benefit from the shale boom also in another way: 

Speaking of low-cost, the costs for rail providers may be getting even lower with the advent of natural gas-powered locomotives. Recently Buffett’s BNSF along with other major railways (including CSX and our neighbor to the north, Canadian National Railway) have begun testing natural gas powered locomotives.

These engines can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which provides an amazing cost break. In particular, while a gallon of diesel will run you about $4 the equivalent of natural gas costs about 50 cents.

So while it’s costing more and more to ship via truck or plane, the rail industry could be set for even more cost breaks. That’s a solid long-term trend if I ever saw one.

May this positive development inspire misled Earth Hour sponsors in all other countries, which have been infested by this bogus festival of darkness!

Environment Canada's senior climatologist: "The swings in temperature have had nothing to do with climate"

Environment Canada's senior climatologist David Phillips appears to have a realistic view on the recent big temperature swings:

While some experts are pointing to climate change as a pivotal factor in weather fluctuations, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist says temperature changes are par for the course.

“There’s a difference between climate and temperature,” explained David Phillips in an interview.

“The wild swings in temperature have had nothing to do with climate. It’s about where the winds come from.”

The recent warming trend, for example, was caused by breezes blowing in from the southern United States.

“This thaw did not come out of our chimneys and exhaust pipes,” said Mr. Phillips. “It came out of Colorado.”

Canadian global warming scare: Outdoor skating season could shrink!

Canadian climatologists have published a truly scary global warming report - the outdoor skating season could shrink from the previous average of nine weeks to less than six weeks in 2050! This groundbreaking study by researchers from the McGill and Concordia universities study is, not surprisingly, cited by warmist David Suzuki:

“Many locations across the country have seen significant decreases in the length of the OSS (outdoor skating season), as measured by the number of cold winter days conducive to the creation of rink ice,” their study states.

This echoes a 2009 David Suzuki Foundation report, On Thin Ice: Winter Sports and Climate Change. The McGill investigation looks at constructed outdoor rinks while DSF’s focuses on frozen rivers, canals and lakes, but the conclusions are similar. Both predict that, unless we rein in greenhouse gas emissions, outdoor skating in parts of Canada could be history within the next 50 to 100 years (the McGill study’s authors now say it could happen within 20 to 30 years), and the length of the outdoor skating season will continue to decline across the country.

“Our hope is that Canadians from coast to coast will help us track changes in skating conditions, not just this year, but for many years to come,” associate professor Robert McLeman said in a release. “This data will help us determine the impact of climate change on winter in terms of length of season and average temperatures.”

According to the DSF report, one of Canada’s best-loved outdoor skating venues, Ottawa’s Rideau Canal, provides an example of what to expect. It concludes that, with current emissions trends, the canal’s skating season could shrink from the previous average of nine weeks to 6.5 weeks by 2020, less than six weeks by 2050 and just one week by the end of the century. In fact, two winters ago, the season lasted 7.5 weeks, and last year it was down to four. The canal had yet to fully open for skating when this column was written.

On Thin Ice notes that many of Canada’s hockey heroes got their start on outdoor rinks. “Without pond hockey, we probably wouldn’t have what has become the modern game of hockey,” the authors state. The DSF study says climate change could have a profound effect on many other winter sports, from skiing and snowboarding to winter mountaineering.

Before Canadians start panicking, maybe we should remind them about what a leading British climatologist said about the impact of global warming in the UK thirteen years ago:

According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia,within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

"Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

So, we should perhaps take the new Canadian ice report with a pinch of salt. 

One could, of course, hope that Canadian taxpayers' money would be used for some other purposes than this kind of climate "science". 

Talk about double standards!: Greenpeace Norway "proud" of the country´s oil industry

Norwegians, those socialist Arabs of the Arctic, who enjoy a life in luxury  thanks to lucrative fossil fuel exports, also enjoy lecturing others on the lack of environmental awareness. Greenpeace Norway is no exception; these greenies are proud of their oil and gas industry while at the same time strongly condemning other countries - like Canada - which try to benefit from their own natural resources: 

I'd come to those offices because I was interested in the views of the world's largest environmental group on the industrial darling of the Norwegian nation. Was Greenpeace -- an organization often characterized as extremist by the Canadian government -- going to provide me the first voices I had heard stridently opposing the Norwegian oil industry? Not really. Like everything else in this country, the dialogue was decidedly more thoughtful, and typical of the much lower rhetorical temperature in Norway.

I was met by Martin Norman and Truls Gulowsen, two veteran campaigners from the Greenpeace Oslo office. 

When I asked if they were proud of the Norwegian oil industry, there was a somewhat awkward pause. Gulowsen offered these measured thoughts:

"In Norway the oil industry is the biggest problem for responsible action on climate change and probably will be re sponsible for a lot of problems in the future.

 But as a Norwegian, I am quite proud that we as a nation have been able to control the world's most powerful industry to the degree that we have. So when we discuss the oil industry with my international colleagues sometimes it makes me a little proud that many of my colleagues would be happy if they could get their oil industry up to Norwegian standards in terms of regulation and precautionary measures and openness."

Oh yes, Greenpeace´s man in Norway fakes some vague criticism of the the Norwegian fossil fuel industry, but in general he is proud of it! No wonder then that Gulowsen every year gets an invitation to speak at the Norwegian Police Academy, where he probably concentrates on berating foreign governments for endangering the future of the world, by allowing the exploration of fossil fuels: 

Especially when it comes to operations in Alberta, it seems the oil industry is not under control. It's not regulated and monitored and enforced the way one would believe as a Norwegian. The more it leaks out to the rest of the world about how Canada lets the oil companies behave in the tar sands is gradually changing the world's picture about the environmental status and responsibly of Canada, and that isn't beneficial to any Canadians. "

The conversion of a former Canadian "skeptic"

Former Canadian self-proclaimed "skeptic", meteorologist Scott Sutherland tries to imitate Richard Muller:

I've been a meteorologist and air quality scientist for the last 12 years, so I knew the science behind the issue, but I'll admit I was a global warming/climate change skeptic. As a scientist, I believe that skepticism is a good thing. It makes us look for more evidence, and more evidence leads to a better understanding of the world.

However, I didn't outright deny that climate change was happening. The facts were there that the average global temperature was on the rise. I just wasn't convinced that it was solely due to human activity.

It took a lot of research on my part, and a lot of sifting through bad science, misinformation, and biased reports to get there, but I'm no longer a skeptic.

The "research" that led Scott Sutherland to believe that climate change is "solely due to human activity" seems to be that he has read - and blindly believes in - Muller´s and Hansen´s  widely debunked studies. Not a very convincing conversion, but maybe it will make it easier for Sutherland to join the warmist gravy train on the way to a better paid job.

The Toronto Sun´s columnist Simon Kent has written an excellent brief history of the UN global warming travelling circus:

Marrakech, Morocco; Bali, Indonesia; Lyon, France; Bonn, Germany; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Cancun, Mexico; The Hague, the Netherlands; Vienna, Austria; Montreal, Canada; Bangkok, Thailand; Barcelona, Spain; Durban, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Milan, Italy; Kyoto, Japan and New Delhi, India.

Sorry, trick question. All have played host at some time to the 47 UN-funded get-togethers in the past 15 years.

I know, I know, it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it.

Here is a supplementary question: How many binding treaties have been ratified by all parties in the name of defeating so-called anthropogenic global warming in that time?

Not abstracts of intent or noble purpose like the Kyoto protocols. We’re talking binding agreements with enforceable penalties, measurable aims and deliverable achievements signed by every single nation on the planet from the richest to the very poorest.

How many? None.

That’s right, a big fat zero. Nada. Zip. Nil. Zilch.

Still, the talking goes on in some of the most desirable locations on earth.

Three and sometimes four times a year the great and the good of the global warm-monger industry meet to chatter and wag their fingers at major industrialized nations like Canada.

These unelected and unaccountable members of the UN ineptocracy were at it again last week.

In Bonn, Germany the latest meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change ended Friday.

The fortnight-long get together was meant to develop a timetable for implementing the so-called “Kyoto 2” extension which Canada along with the US, Japan and Russia wisely announced they’ll ignore.

At the end of the meeting negotiators agreed that “progress had been made” and “important principles established’’ but really, they would have to meet again for more talks soon.

So next stop is Doha, Qatar for another round of debate, starting November 26.

At which point you could reasonably ask: What was achieved at Bonn besides abject inertia?

Not much. Just continuing division over how long the extended Kyoto protocol should operate, some very public squabbling over whose turn it was to chair the various sub-committees and an agreement to talk more about future agendas.

There was also the small matter of (ahem) money.

UN Climate Chief Christiana Figueres insisted it was critical the Bonn talks made further progress on how funds will be raised – extorted might be another apt word — from major industrialized nations and directed to poorer countries in the year’s after 2020.

This epic global fundraising will underwrite something called the Green Climate Fund, to be run under the paternalistic auspices of the UN.

The fund will need $100 billion a year from 2020 onwards to operate. No precise agreement at Bonn on how it would work, despite Christiana Figueres exhortations, just consensus that major developed and industrialised countries like Canada will have to foot the bill. So there.

All of which pretty much reflects the UN as it is today; a preening debating society that marries incompetence with good intentions, meddling with over-reaching ambition.

Canada: $779 million of taxpayers´ money wasted on carbon capture project

Another "green dream" goes down the drain, this time in Canada. The major private partners have plugged the plug on the $1.4-billion carbon capture and storage project in Alberta:

Partners in a $1.4-billion carbon capture and storage project in Alberta have pulled the plug on it, saying the economics around the technology are too poor to go ahead.

TransAlta Corp., Canada's largest investor-owned power generator, said industry partners Capital Power Corp. and Enbridge decided not to proceed with the Pioneer project after running front-end engineering and design studies.

"The industry partners determined that although the technology works and capital costs are in line with expectations, the revenue from carbon sales and the price of emissions reductions are insufficient to allow the project to proceed at this time," TransAlta said in its first-quarter results.

The project was made possible through $779 million in federal and provincial funding over 15 years, part of moves by Ottawa to reduce carbon emissions, credited with global warming.

$779 million of Canadian taxpayers´ money wasted on a totally useless project! 

It would be interesting to know the amounts of money already been spent on similar projects globally. 

Australian climate madness: Quantas jets to fly on cooking oil

Julia Gillard´s Australia is clearly showing the way in climate madness. Now the country´s major airline Quantas has began using cooking oil - about ten times more expensive than ordinary jet fuel - as fuel for its kangaroo jets:

On Friday, Qantas Airlines launched Australia's first commercial flight using a 50/50 mixture of regular fuel and refined cooking oil. Faced with the threat of an upcoming European tax on airline carbon emissions, Qantas is one of many airlines scrambling to find a green alternative to regular jet fuel.

"From July, Qantas will be the only airline in the world to face liabilities in three jurisdictions, so our sense of urgency is justified."

Europe already imposes a controversial carbon tax on airlines, while New Zealand has a carbon tax that applies to flights within that country by Qantas' budget carrier Jetstar.

Australia's tax on carbon emissions comes into force on July 1.

If Quantas is serious about using cooking oil, then this is only the beginning of its problems:

Jet fuel is the largest operational expense for the Australian carrier, which in February announced it would slash at least 500 jobs and cut costs after an 83-per-cent slump in first-half net profits.
In March it hiked its fuel surcharge for the second time in two months, saying its fuel costs were expected to rise by $312 million U.S. in the six months to June 30.


Maybe Quantas is planning to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil to fuel their first class only flights?

A Canadian airline is apparently eager to follow the kangaroos:

Next week, a Porter Airlines Bombardier Q400 powered by an oilseed-based fuel will travel from Toronto to Ottawa in what Porter calls the first biofuel-powered passenger flight in Canada. The demonstration flight Tuesday comes five days before Earth Day.


If this madness spreads, be prepared to pay considerably more for your home cooking oil!

This also fuels suspicion that the entire EU air carbon tax could be a devilish scheme set up by the European olive oil lobby in order to dramatically increase lagging exports, :-)

Great news from the US and Canada: Media not interested in global warming

A Canadian feature writer is whining about the continiously diminishing interest of US and Canadian media to write about global warming and "climate change":

Even as dust storms rolled over Phoenix, fires ravaged Texas, tornadoes flattened towns like Goderich, Ont., and rivers flooded many regions, mentions of climate change in newspapers and on broadcast media in North America decreased substantially.
According to the Virginia-based news aggregator DailyClimate.org, coverage dropped by 20 per cent from 2010 and by more than 40 per cent from 2009.
Last year at least 7,140 journalists and opinion writers published some 19,000 stories on climate change, as opposed to more than 11,100 reporters who filed 32,400 stories in 2009.
“The decline was seen across almost all benchmarks measured by the news service: 20 per cent fewer reporters covered the issue in 2011 than in 2010, 20 per cent fewer outlets published stories, and the most prolific reporters on the climate change beat published 20 per cent fewer stories,” wrote editor Douglas Fischer, whose organization tracks both U.S. and Canadian media.

Andrew Weaver, with the imposing title "Canada Research Chair in climate modelling and analysis at the University of Victoria" thinks that he has found a way to end the desperation of the warmists:

“I think the next phase will be a bunch of good news stuff, solutions,” he says. “Like, ‘Hey we’ve got this solar power going here,’ or ‘Look at this wind power there.’
“Frankly I wish there was more of that because there is a lot of solutions out there but we’re just not focusing on them.”

Get prepared for another severe winter in the US and Canada:

Long-term forecasts are suggesting that the coming winter could be colder than usual, and have more snow than normal. Exacta Weather are predicting a cold winter this year. “Large parts of Central and North America will face prolonged periods of below average temperatures with above average snowfall throughout this winter, with many Eastern and Western parts also facing periods of below average temperatures with above average snowfall amounts.

“We expect North America and the Pacific Northwest region to experience a very severe winter, the Cascades snowpack is likely to see increased levels due to the negative (cold) phase of PDO. Our weather models are also showing an increased likelihood for major snow events in Northeastern and Midwestern parts of the US throughout December 2011 and January 2012, that could see severe blizzard conditions hit New York City and Chicago.

“With low solar activity levels, changes to the Gulf Stream, the negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and the general trend for a much colder winter after the onset of last year’s La Niña, this winter could prove to be a record breaker with extremely cold temperatures and exceptional levels of snow for many parts of the US”.
“I fully expect many parts of the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada to experience a particularly harsh winter this year with copious amounts of snow,” stated Madden.
That might mean a great ski season for skiers. But also may mean now is the time to get your planning for winter started. Is the snowblower ready to go? Are your snow tires ready?

It looks like Europe - or at least the UK and Ireland - also are in for a cold winter:

Yet another long range forecasting agency has pinned its colours to the mast by predicting a colder than average winter 2011-12 across Ireland and the United Kingdom.

UK-based Positive Weather Solutions says the winter months will be colder than average everywhere and that some regions will experience significantly colder than average temperatures between December and March.

The agency, which has a relatively high success rate in its long range weather predictions, has also given a 36% chance of the Ireland and Britain experiencing a White Christmas. This prediction in reflected in the latest odds from Paddy Power Bookmakers who on Sunday shortened their odds of snow falling on Christmas Day to 11/4 in in London and 7/2 in Dublin.

The chilly outlook follows six weeks after another UK-based long range weather forecaster, also issued a severe winter weather warning. James Madden from weather organisation Exacta Weather is once again forecasting record breaking snowfall and freezing temperatures during November, December and January.
